He then bit on the free Windows 10 Home upgrade offer from Microsoft and that went right through. He was on Windows 7 Home and the printer was working fine.

He uses an Acer Veriton desktop connecting wirelessly to his home router. I am posting this for a neighbor who has called me up for assistance with this very old printer.
